The Hipster:
Shadow Thought: “If I can be seen as unique, I will not feel insignificant.”
Fictional Character Type 4 Examples: April Ludgate, Luna Lovegood, Phoebe Buffet, and Willy Wonka.
Hipster has become a bit of a buzzword with plenty of negative connotations. Hipster isn’t a trend, though, even if it seems like one. Being a hipster simply means wanting to be seen as authentic, outside of the trends, or, more often, ahead of them. This is why it’s easy to associate this term with the Enneagram Type 4 and why April Ludgate makes this list. She liked to be seen as the black sheep and outcast. She often went out of her way to prove just how non-mainstream she was. Much like the appearance of the Hipster trend, the outside doesn’t make the hipster. It’s the motivation behind the behaviors that show us whether or not it’s an attempt to be trendy or truly stand out, or at least not care if you do stand out as different.
Too often we confuse behaviors with the motivations behind them thereby leaving us in the shadows. Enneagram coaching can help!
